During my time away from my homeland, Syria, I was often obsessed with the idea of settling down. The prospect of not having a place to call home — of not having the opportunity to take root in a place like a tree, specifically my own place — terrified me.
It was impossible to imagine that I would return in ten years, so I tried to calm myself through drawing, and through inventing visual metaphors — the most powerful tool in drawing. I wanted to be a tree? Well then: I am a moving tree. I am different from ordinary trees.
I learned, while creating this metaphor in 2016, that drawing can give another dimension to life — even to its most difficult crises. After drawing the moving tree, I changed greatly, and my pain eased a bit.
