In this story of the different dragon in the kingdom of dragons, I wanted to harness symbols and visual tools that reinforce the ideas of myth, fantasy, antiquity and adventure — adding story-related elements to the main theme: old books, castles, the sea, the island, and other details.

The heart of the story is difference, and accepting one's difference among one's peers. So I liked adding other dragons alongside him on some pages, to reinforce the idea of him trying to be the best he can be — even among peers he does not resemble.

I chose the colour red for the main character, to always keep the attention on him while we follow the journey of him accepting his uniqueness.

Storyboard

When a story has many scenes, I first work the whole book out as a storyboard — planning the flow of the spreads at a small scale, so the pages stay in harmony and each one hands over cleanly to the next before I commit to the final colour.
